Why People Fail the Hazard Perception Test (And How to Avoid It)
Clicking Too Early
A common instinct is to "game" the test — clicking preemptively as soon as a clip starts, or tapping in a steady rhythm hoping to catch the hazard by luck. Several state systems, most notably Victoria's, are specifically built to detect this behaviour and will award zero marks for that clip when a response comes before anything is genuinely developing on screen.

Clicking Too Late

Some develop gradually — a car drifting slowly toward a lane line, a cyclist wobbling around a parked vehicle, a pedestrian glancing at their phone near a crossing without breaking stride.
