What Happens If You Fail the Hazard Perception Test? Retake Rules by State

Failing the Hazard Perception Test does not damage your licence progression in any Australian state — you simply rebook and retake it. Retake fees, waiting periods and access windows differ significantly by state, though, so learners should confirm the current rules with their state transport authority before booking their next attempt.

You Can Always Retake the HPT

Failing the HPT once is common and it is not a red flag on your record. It doesn't cancel your learner licence, doesn't count against you at the practical driving test, and doesn't reset any supervised hours you've already logged. Plenty of learners pass on their second attempt after a bit of targeted practice — treat a failed attempt as useful feedback about which hazard cues you're still missing, not as a verdict on your driving. In fact, published pass rates vary widely by state, and much of that variation reflects system design rather than candidate ability.

Retake Rules by State

StateRetake ProcessNotable Detail
NSWRebook through Service NSW — no mandatory waiting period between attemptsA fee applies for each attempt — confirm the current amount with Service NSW
VICRebook the Online HPT or an in-person sessionThe first attempt is often free for learners; confirm current fee for further attempts with VicRoads
QLDRebook through your TMR accountThe online HPT gives access for up to 12 months once paid for; confirm current retake fee with Transport and Main Roads
SARetake within your access periodThe online HPT is accessed via a 12-month subscription — confirm current pricing with Service SA
WARetake on another day at a Department of Transport centre or regional agentA resit fee applies — confirm current amount with Transport WA
ACT24-hour lockout after your first attempt before you can try againFirst attempt is free; a fee applies to further attempts — confirm current amount with Access Canberra
TASRetake immediately if you failThe test itself is free to sit
NTRebook through the NT Government processConfirm current retake rules and any fee with the NT Government

Fees and waiting periods change — the figures above are deliberately general because stale numbers would mislead you. Always check your state transport authority's website before rebooking.

What to Do Between Attempts

A gap between attempts is more useful when it's spent deliberately. Start by reviewing any feedback the test gave you — several state systems (notably Victoria) indicate which clips or scenario types you missed — cross-reference those against our full list of hazard categories the HPT checks for to see which patterns you need to drill. That's your study list. If you weren't given detailed feedback, think back to which clips felt uncertain and note the pattern: side-street entries, pedestrians, sudden braking ahead, cyclists moving around obstacles.

Then get more supervised driving practice specifically focused on scanning for early hazard cues — asking your supervisor to call out what they noticed a few seconds before you did is one of the fastest ways to sharpen your read on developing hazards. Reinforce it with knowledge-based practice questions on our state practice pages before your next attempt. Our post on why people fail the HPT breaks down the specific timing mistakes worth drilling.

Does Failing the HPT Affect My Learner Licence?

No. You remain on your learner licence and can continue supervised driving as normal while you prepare to retake. Failing the HPT doesn't shorten your learner period, doesn't wipe logged hours, and doesn't create any mark against your driving record. The only practical impact is that you can't move on to your practical driving assessment (or its state equivalent) until you've passed the HPT — so the delay to progression is however long it takes you to rebook and pass on the next attempt. If you're unsure when you were first eligible in the first place, our guide to when you can sit the HPT in each state covers the minimum learner hold times.

If you're new to the format entirely and want a refresher on how the test is structured and scored before your next attempt, our complete beginner's guide to how the HPT works walks through it end to end.
